Mens Fashion Trends: Vintage Workwear

A key menswear trend for the Spring/Summer 2011 is workwear. However this is not your standard workwear trend, this time it is vintage and old skool workwear that has
found itself on the fashion radar.

Before we deal with the vintage part, let us first deal with concept of workwear. By workwear I don’t mean a well tailored suit, or a uniform, and I certainly don’t mean those stained and ripped jogging pants your dad used to do the gardening in. Think of workwear as rustic clothing with comfort and durability for a strong casual-wear look,
like the blue collar workers of old.

This time around the workwear trend has smartening itself up by combining ‘Sunday best’ pieces with rugged wardrobe staples for a unique and eclectic take on the trend. Keep a natural and neutral colour palette and add paisley and floral prints to give a soft edge. Go for the slubby yarns for knits and add checks to casual blazers and plimsolls and, most importantly, team with faded, worn denim.

The Vintage Workwear Trend (clockwise for top left): Paisley shirt with short sleeves:
£26, Topman; Brown leather belt: £39, Religion @ standout.net; Vintage cotton canvas
mid-top plimsolls: £50, Lyle and Scott; Kayak rip-runner jeans: £85, AllSaints.

The vintage workwear look is one that comes back year on year and will last throughout spring and summer. For warmer weather switch the faded denim and buttoned up shirt for city shorts, vest and a light faded denim shirt. The plimsolls or boots can be exchanged for a gladiator-style sandal. When the inevitable British Summertime is over all too soon, add a thick loose knit cardigan and distressed scarf.

It’s the workwear you shouldn’t wear to work.
