Fred Perry Clothing

Most people shopping for Fred Perry sportswear are far too young to remember the founder’s brilliant career, but they can take advantage of the 100th anniversary of his birth.  Some retailers are offering special sales on selected items in honour of Fred Perry’s immense contribution to the world of British street fashion.

Back in the late 1940’s, long after Perry had made his name as a world champion tennis star, he made some improvements on Tibby Wegner’s idea for an anti-perspirant device to be worn around the wrist, and invented the sweatband.  Next the two collaborated on a sports shirt which, when first introduced at Wimbledon in 1952, became an overnight hit.

From there, the Fred Perry line of first-class clothing with its laurel logo (the old Wimbledon symbol) went on to become one of the most coveted in the U.K. and around the world.

That first Fred Perry polo shirt came only in white, but when its popularity surged, a new range of colours and styles was introduced, and before long the line included top-of-the-line footwear for sports and casual wear as well as sweaters, beanies, shoulder bags and more.  The whole line is consistently made for durability and comfort, not to mention the signature look of sleek lines and excellent fit.

Like the original shirt, which gained its popularity initially with some great advertising by top Wimbledon players as well as Fred Perry himself, the clothing line has bridged decades and cultures due to its relative value for cost and the great look and feel of all its products.  While fads may come and go, true style and class will continue to be the major components of the name brands that span generations, and Fred Perry’s line of quality sportswear is a perfect example.
